Five players Tottenham must sell in crucial summer squad overhaul

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a crucial squad overhaul this summer, although those plans depend heavily on where they finish this season.

They are struggling to keep their head above water in a relegation battle that could easily end with them dropping into the Championship.

While their fate is not in their own hands, a two-point gap to 17th-placed West Ham United is not insurmountable.

Several players will have to move on if Roberto De Zerbi is to build a team capable of returning the club to the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Tottenham must raise funds to do that, so read on as Sports Central looks at five players who could be victims of a ruthless yet necessary clear-out this summer.

Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario was initially considered a shrewd acquisition when he first joined from Empoli in 2023, but recent performances have been far from inspiring.

He is also injury-prone, which only emphasises the need for Tottenham to cash in.

Vicario doesn’t fit the profile that De Zerbi wants from a goalkeeper. His system is heavily reliant on a goalie who is calm under pressure with a decent passing range.

Those aren’t qualities that stand out from Vicario’s repertoire, so his rumoured move to Inter Milan could benefit all parties involved.

Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero has repeatedly spoken about his desire to play in Spain, and Tottenham’s ongoing struggles are a perfect reason to jump ship.

The World Cup winner isn’t short on potential suitors either, with La Liga powerhouses Atletico Madrid and Barcelona already expressing an interest.

Atletico were first on the scene and should have snapped him up last summer, but Tottenham were unwilling to part ways with their captain.

Second time may be the charm, especially with Tottenham’s top-flight future hanging in the balance.

Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher’s move to Tottenham was one of the most puzzling transfer decisions the club has made in years, and it’s easy to see why.

Tottenham are lacking tempo-controllers, and Gallagher is anything but.

He’s more of a workhorse who prioritises running and intensity over technical skills, so it’s difficult to see how he fits into De Zerbi’s team.

Cutting him loose six months after spending £35 million to sign him may not look good on paper, but it’s one of several tough calls that must be made if Tottenham are to be taken seriously again.

Richarlison

Richarlison has previously flirted with a Tottenham exit, but a move has never got over the line. However, it’s time for the club to cash in while they still can.

Other than being injury-prone, Richarlison is one of only a few players whose versatility doesn’t make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

He doesn’t have the 1v1 skills to play as a winger or the striker’s instincts to lead the line.

Richarlison has only reached double figures in Premier League goals once over the past four years.

He’s one goal away from doing so this season, but that record is exactly why the club must move on from him this summer.

Wilson Odobert

Wilson Odobert has spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch since joining Tottenham from Burnley.

The 21-year-old is currently set to spend another lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

He has bagged two goals and five assists in 33 games across all competitions, but has yet to open his Premier League account.

Tottenham will struggle to cut him loose this summer, but they should be searching for a better player to replace Heung-min Son.
