Nottingham Forest have entered the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.
The Liverpool star is attracting interest from the Tricky Trees as they search for Elliot Anderson’s replacement.
Liverpool are aware of the interest, although any deal will not come cheaply. The Reds reportedly value Jones at around £40 million.
Forest are yet to indicate whether they are willing to match that asking price, particularly after Inter Milan recently had an opening offer worth £21.5m dismissed.
Former Reds manager Jurgen Klopp praised Jones for his ‘immense skillset‘. The German said it is a joy to watch the 24-year-old.
The Merseyside club are happy to keep Jones unless their valuation is met, underlining how highly they rate him.
Jones is entering the final year of his current contract, which naturally raises questions over his long-term future.
However, Liverpool have not ruled out opening discussions over an extension if he remains at Anfield beyond this summer.
From Liverpool’s perspective, a £40 million sale would undoubtedly provide a welcome boost towards funding another defensive midfielder.
Strengthening the number six position has been discussed throughout the window, and cash generated from Jones’ departure could help accelerate that pursuit.
Liverpool must stand firm on their asking price
Liverpool should not be too eager to cash in. Jones is one of the squad’s most dependable midfielders.
He is capable of playing in multiple roles while offering composure in possession, tactical discipline and homegrown status.
He may not always command headlines, but his consistency and understanding of the club’s demands make him an excellent squad option.
Unless Forest meet Liverpool’s full valuation, retaining Jones could ultimately prove more beneficial than banking the transfer fee.
