Chelsea consider move for free agent John Stones

Chelsea are now eyeing a move for free agent John Stones as they look to shore up their rearguard ahead of next season, according to the Daily Mail.

The Blues tried to kill rumours they were interested in him around a month ago. However, it appears the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge are now considering him.

Chelsea are scouring the market for defensive reinforcements after struggling last season. Bringing in new defenders is a priority for new manager Xabi Alonso.

Stones is an experienced customer who has delivered at the very highest level. The 32-year-old is entering the twilight of his career but could still do a fantastic job for Chelsea.

Signing the England international on a free transfer would allow them to offload Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo

Chelsea would also be able to send Mamadou Sarr, Josh Acheampong and Aaron Anselmino on loan to develop.

Stones has the versatility to operate in a back three or four and can even step into midfield when required. He brings a winning mentality that the team desperately needs.

He won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City.

Stones is a stylish, ball-playing defender who would be an excellent pick-up, especially if he can stay fit.

Chelsea are also pushing forward with plans to sign Maxence Lacroix. Both players would complete a small makeover of a backline that needed upgrading.

If they can get a serious left-back and goalkeeper to provide competition for Mike Penders, they could challenge for the Premier League title.
