Tottenham Hotspur have broken their transfer record for the second time in less than a week, officially announcing the signing of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
The high-profile deal is worth £100 million, with Spurs paying £92.5 million up front and an additional £7.5m in performance-related add-ons.
The signing marks a major statement of intent from the club, surpassing the £85m record set days earlier for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi was instrumental in the pursuit, identifying his compatriot as a key addition at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“I’m very happy to be here,” the midfielder told Spurs’ official website. “When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.
“I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football.
“It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”
The 26-year-old joins Spurs in the prime of his career, bringing a blend of tactical intelligence, defensive resilience and progressive ball-carrying ability.
He was a key figure for Newcastle last season, making 53 appearances in all competitions. Newcastle were reluctant to part with the deep-lying playmaker, but the financial package proved too significant to reject.
The chance to work with De Zerbi is an irresistible next step for his career.
