Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle is a fan of Carlos Baleba

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle is a huge admirer of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, according to the Daily Mail.

After major departures on Tyneside this summer, Jaissle has made signing a new midfield leader a priority ahead of his first Premier League campaign.

Newcastle have begun exploring several options, although none may appeal to the new Magpies boss as much as Baleba.

The ‘absolutely wonderful‘ 22-year-old Cameroon international arrived at Brighton from Lille as Moises Caicedo’s long-term replacement.

Baleba’s dynamic physical profile, line-breaking passing and relentless defensive work rate made him one of the Premier League’s standout young defensive midfielders.

However, his form dipped dramatically after he was linked with moves elsewhere.

Despite this, prising Baleba away from the Amex Stadium will not be easy. Brighton have proven themselves to be tough negotiators over the years.

The Seagulls are under no pressure to sell but know the player is open to a move, having previously attracted interest from Manchester United.

With the new season less than two weeks away, Newcastle’s need for midfield reinforcements is urgent, especially after Wednesday’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Everton.

Brighton will be aware that their Premier League counterparts have the financial strength to make a compelling offer following high-profile summer sales.

Jaissle’s backing of Baleba could prompt sporting director Ross Wilson to consider a formal approach before the transfer window closes on September 1.

If Newcastle firm up their interest with a concrete bid, persuading Brighton to do business late in the transfer window will be challenging.

Baleba is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, but he is expected to return in a few weeks.
