Ex-Man United striker Michael Owen labels Marcus Rashford as Red Devils ‘weak link’

Michael Owen has questioned Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford’s attitude and body language after the 1-1 draw against Fulham.

He described the England international as the ‘weak link’ in United’s attack.

United avoided defeat at Craven Cottage after Matheus Cunha’s deflected effort rescued a point, but Rashford once again struggled to make an impact in the final third.

Manager Michael Carrick took him off in the 76th minute after another frustrating afternoon.

Rashford has now gone five Premier League games without a goal or assist, and Owen believes he’s not enjoying his football at the moment.

“On the left, Marcus Rashford has probably been the quietest of those attackers,” he said (via the Sun).

“He was quiet again today in his body language, just the glum face. He just doesn’t seem to be loving his football, which has been a permanent frustration with Marcus.

“It does look like the weight of the world is on his shoulders and you just think how? Why? He’s living everybody’s dream.

“Surely there’s something behind the scenes that is making him look as if he’s not enjoying his football at the moment?”

Rashford returned to United over the summer following an impressive loan spell at Barcelona.

Despite helping Barca win the league, the club decided against triggering the £26 million buy option to sign him permanently. They spent £70m on Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Gordon hasn’t scored a league goal yet but already has four assists in six games.

Despite Owen’s criticism, Carrick backed the Englishman after the Fulham draw.

The United boss praised Rashford for ‘getting himself in good positions’. He also admitted that the forward picked up a ‘minor issue’ during the game.

“We had to bring him off as he had a bit of an issue,” he said. “Marcus was a threat. He could have had a couple of goals for us.

“He’s another one who is getting himself in good positions – it’s just not quite falling for him. It will. We know Marcus. We know how to get the best out of him and will continue to do that.”
