Newcastle United claimed a hard-fought victory over Millwall in the League Cup to continue their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 campaign last night.
The Magpies did just about enough to get over the finish line with a win thanks to a composed goal from Joe Willock following a fantastic cross from Lewis Hall.
They were pushed to the limit by the robust Championship side, and a few players stepped up with brilliant performances.
Fabian Schar was terrific. The 34-year-old centre-back has not started a game since January 7, but slotted in seamlessly alongside Sven Botman.
Schar won six out of seven duels. His rogressive forays (two) and long balls (5/16) were perhaps Newcastle’s biggest threats on the night.
He played a key pass, made eight clearances, won a foul and came close to scoring.
Schar’s return is a major boost for Newcastle, even if he is unlikely to displace the younger centre-backs.
Botman and Malick Thiaw will likely start more games as the season progresses, with Newcastle keen to build around the pair.
However, having Schar available gives manager Matthias Jaissle a hugely valuable option.
The Swiss international defender (86 caps) is a good centre-back. His leadership and experience are important attributes.
He can provide stability when needed and offer excellent cover for the starting duo.
Newcastle will hope to continue winning this weekend when they travel to take on Leeds United in the Premier League.
