Manchester United winger Bryan Mbeumo captained Cameroon to a crucial win in their first game of the extended international break yesterday.
The Red Devils forward led Cameroon to a 3-1 win over Comoros in their opening Group G Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The Man United star scored and delivered a brilliant performance to help his side clinch the three points as they look to top their group.
Mbeumo was a constant threat with his dangerous runs in behind the defence. He sat down two defenders before slotting the ball into the net early in the second half.
The 27-year-old played two key passes, fired five shots, registered three progressive carries and completed two out of five crosses.
While Mbeumo has blown hot and cold for Man United this season, he started the international campaign in outstanding form.
He will look to carry that momentum into the upcoming game against Congo as they bid to qualify for the continental showpiece and reclaim the crown following their 2017 triumph.
United will be hoping Mbeumo can continue his good form when he returns from international duty.
The Cameroon international (33 caps) has scored just two goals in five Premier League appearances for the Red Devils this season. He has missed foru big chances.
Those numbers highlight why United will need more from their attacking star if they are to climb the table.
United are 12th in the Premier League and must start turning chances into points, or manager Michael Carrick’s job could be on the line.
Mbeumo is key to that push, with his pace, movement and finishing potentially crucial to United qualifying for the Champions League again.
