Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the 2026-27 season continued on Tuesday as they exited the League Cup in the third round, falling 3-1 to Liverpool.
Spurs are without a league win or goal this season and travelled to Anfield hoping to ease the pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Off the back of three consecutive substitute appearances following his return from injury, Ghanaian international Mohammed Kudus was handed his first start since January 4.
With Spurs struggling in attack, they were hoping for a more productive display from Kudus on Merseyside.
The 26-year-old won just two of his seven duels and managed one shot on target from three attempts, including a gilt-edged chance to restore parity shortly after Spurs had fallen behind to Alexis Mac Allister’s opener.
Kudus lost possession 16 times from just 39 touches and completed only one of his four dribbles.
Kudus was replaced by Savio with 15 minutes remaining, although De Zerbi may have considered making the change earlier given his underwhelming display.
He will hope to rediscover his best form when Tottenham host Aston Villa this weekend.
Spurs have already set an unwanted club record by failing to score in their opening four league games of a season for the first time and simply cannot afford any further setbacks.
