Suzuki was the unsung hero as Aston Villa beat Spurs

Aston Villa claimed a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur to earn their first three points of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Villains took the lead close to half-time when Johan Manzambi stabbed in a chance from close range before Nicolas Jackson produced a stunning goal.

However, Villa saved the best for last as Emiliano Buendia fired home a thunderbolt that earned his side the win even though the hosts scored two late goals.

Jackson and Manzambi looked fantastic in attack. The midfield duo were terrific, and there were several other exciting performers for Villa.

However, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was the unsung hero, playing a key role in helping his side earn those three points.

Suzuki made three incredible saves to keep out Savio and a couple of other impressive interventions, earning praise from manager Unai Emery.

The 24-year-old also did really well on crosses, and his passing was on point. His long ball was crucial to Jackson’s goal.

His starting position was excellent, and he helped put out a few fires before the opponents could capitalise on quick balls in behind.

Suzuki has adeptly replaced Emiliano Martinez following his arrival at the Birmingham-based club for around €35 million.

A promising start to life at Villa is already turning into something much more exciting for the ‘powerful’ Suzuki.

Replacing a goalkeeper of Martinez’s stature was never going to be straightforward, particularly with the pressure that comes with a significant transfer fee.

However, the Japanese international has looked increasingly comfortable between the posts and produced another assured display.

His shot-stopping, command of his area and distribution are all encouraging signs of a goalkeeper capable of growing into the role.

If Suzuki can maintain these performances and continue developing under Emery, there is no reason why he cannot enjoy a long and successful career at Villa.
