Tottenham Hotspur signed Andrew Robertson to add experience and winning know-how to their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
However, Robertson is one of many Tottenham players who have underperformed as they look to bounce back from successive 17th-place finishes in the league.
The 32-year-old had another evening to forget as he captained Scotland to a loss against Switzerland yesterday. He was ineffective in attack as his three crosses all failed to connect.
Robertson has not helped shore up the Tottenham rearguard, and he was equally unimpressive for Scotland on the night, recording zero tackles.
Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi must have been hoping for more from Robertson when he joined to push Destiny Udogie, but he has failed to live up to expectations.
The same was the case against Switzerland. Scotland needed their captain to inspire something but it was not their night.
Robertson needs to raise his level
Robertson is in the latter stage of his career, and some decline should naturally be expected.
However, that should not mean he cannot still produce performances considerably better than what he has shown recently.
Spurs brought Robertson in for his experience, leadership and proven quality at the highest level, and they need to see those qualities more consistently.
He should be helping Udogie develop while also providing Tottenham with a reliable option on the left, rather than struggling for form.
His standards have been extremely high throughout his career, so the current level is not good enough.
Robertson still has plenty to offer, but he must rediscover his intensity, quality and influence.
